Spot instances are unused compute capacity available for discounted rates with a constraint that they may be reclaimed by the cloud provider with a 2 min AWS/30 sec Azure warning. The capacity/performance of a spot instance is exactly the same as any OnDemand/Pay as you Go Instances. They are a great choice for stateless applications, task nodes of EMR Clusters, Dev/Test environments.
